Planning a Walt Disney World vacation from Illinois usually starts with an important question: Which airport should we fly out of?
For families living in Rockford, Northern Illinois, or Chicago’s western and northwest suburbs, there are several options worth comparing. And the airport closest to home isn’t always the one that makes the most sense for your vacation.
Between flight schedules, parking, baggage, transportation, and traveling with children, the best choice involves more than finding the lowest airfare.
At Embrace The Magic Travel, our Rockford-based travel advisors, Alexa Taglia and Caroline Borsini, help Illinois families think through these decisions as part of planning a vacation that works for everyone.
Here’s what to consider when comparing Chicago Rockford International Airport, Chicago O’Hare, Chicago Midway, and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport for your next Disney vacation.
Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD): Convenient for Northern Illinois Families
If you live in Rockford, Loves Park, Machesney Park, Roscoe, Rockton, or Belvidere, Chicago Rockford International Airport is an obvious place to start your search.
One of the biggest advantages of RFD is the convenience of departing closer to home rather than heading toward Chicago. That can be especially appealing for families traveling with young children, grandparents, or several pieces of luggage.
Does Rockford Airport Fly to Orlando?
Chicago Rockford International Airport has Allegiant Air service to Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB). That’s an important distinction.
Orlando Sanford (SFB) and Orlando International Airport (MCO) are two different airports.
Sanford is about 45 miles from Walt Disney World (roughly 50–60 minutes by car) and about 35 miles from Universal Orlando (roughly 40–45 minutes), compared with about 20 miles from Orlando International to Disney. Traffic on I-4 can add time, and Disney does not provide transportation from either airport, so plan your ground transportation before you book.
You may also find fewer choices of travel days from Rockford than from larger airports. Flight schedules and availability change, so it’s important to confirm service for your actual vacation dates.
When Rockford Airport May Be Your Best Choice
RFD is especially worth considering when:
- You prefer departing from an airport close to home.
- The available travel dates fit your family’s schedule.
- You can arrange convenient transportation from Sanford to your resort.
- You value a more manageable airport experience.
- The total vacation cost makes sense after including baggage and ground transportation.
For Rockford-area families, the convenience of the departure airport can make a difference. Just remember to compare the experience on both ends of the flight.
Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD): More Choices for Orlando Flights
Chicago O’Hare is another strong option for Northern Illinois and Chicagoland families planning a Walt Disney World vacation.
As one of the country’s major airline hubs, O’Hare offers extensive flight options, which can be helpful when coordinating a vacation around school schedules, work commitments, or specific resort dates.
Why Families Consider O’Hare
The biggest advantage is flexibility. With a large selection of flights and airlines, families may have more opportunities to find departures that fit their preferred arrival and return schedules.
That can be particularly helpful if you’re hoping to arrive in Orlando early enough to enjoy your Disney resort on your first day, or if you want to avoid a very late return home with tired children.
O’Hare also offers access to flights arriving at Orlando International Airport (MCO), which is generally more convenient to Walt Disney World than Sanford.
What to Consider Before Choosing O’Hare
For Rockford-area families, getting to O’Hare adds another part to the travel day. Consider parking expenses, transportation arrangements, airport arrival requirements, and how everyone will feel after the flight home.
For families in Schaumburg, Elgin, and other northwest suburbs, O’Hare may be a particularly practical choice based on where they live.
And if you’re traveling with little ones, choosing a convenient flight time may be worth more than a small difference in ticket price.
Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW): Another Option for Chicagoland Families
Chicago Midway deserves a place on your comparison list, especially for families in Aurora, Naperville, and other western and southwestern Chicago suburbs. Midway offers another opportunity to compare Orlando-bound flight schedules, fares, and airlines.
Why Midway May Work for Your Family
For some Chicago-area families, Midway may be more convenient than O’Hare. For others, especially those coming from Rockford, the additional drive may outweigh any savings.
The key is to compare the entire trip rather than making assumptions based on airport size or location. When reviewing your options, ask:
- Does Midway offer a flight time that works better for our family?
- Are we comparing nonstop flights or itineraries with connections?
- What will parking or transportation to the airport cost?
- How convenient is the return flight?
- Is the total cost better once baggage and other expenses are included?
Sometimes a flight that looks more expensive at first glance becomes the better value when you consider the convenience of its schedule. And sometimes a lower-priced flight from another airport is worth the extra trip.
Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE): An Alternative Worth Checking
Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport can be easy to overlook when planning a Florida vacation from Illinois. But for families living in Northern Illinois, including the Rockford area, Milwaukee may be worth comparing with the Chicago airports.
MKE has nonstop service to Orlando International Airport, although airlines, schedules, and frequency may change.
Why Consider Flying from Milwaukee?
Milwaukee gives Illinois travelers another airport to look into when searching for a schedule or fare that works for their family. Depending on where you live, it may also provide an alternative to navigating Chicago-area traffic.
Families should compare the driving distance, parking options, flight schedules, and total costs before deciding. For those in Rockford and nearby communities, it makes sense to include Milwaukee in the initial search rather than automatically ruling it out.
Orlando International (MCO) vs. Orlando Sanford (SFB): Why It Matters for Disney Families
One of the most important parts of choosing your Illinois departure airport is understanding where you’ll land in Florida. Most Walt Disney World travelers will want to compare the convenience of Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB).
Orlando International Airport (MCO)
MCO is the primary airport serving the Orlando area and is generally the more convenient option for Walt Disney World vacations.
Families can arrange transportation through airport shuttle providers, private car services, rideshare companies, or rental car companies. While Walt Disney World offers transportation between its resort hotels and theme parks, you’ll still need to arrange transportation from the airport to your Disney resort.
Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB)
Sanford serves the Orlando region but is farther from Walt Disney World. That doesn’t automatically make it a poor choice. A convenient flight from Rockford may still work beautifully for your family.
However, you’ll want to factor in the additional transportation distance, vehicle arrangements, and arrival schedule. For families needing car seats, larger vehicles, or transportation for grandparents and grandchildren, those details deserve attention before booking.
A lower airfare doesn’t always mean a lower overall vacation cost. The goal is to choose the combination of flights and transportation that makes the most sense for your family.
What Illinois Families Should Compare Before Booking Flights
Instead of looking at airfare alone, compare these five things:
1. Total Travel Cost
Include airfare, baggage, seat selection, airport parking or transportation, and ground transportation in Florida.
2. Your Family’s Travel Schedule
Consider your children’s ages, typical routines, and how early everyone needs to get moving on departure day.
3. Nonstop Flights vs. Connections
Nonstop flights may reduce the number of moving parts, particularly for families with young children. However, a connecting itinerary may provide more scheduling flexibility.
4. Arrival and Departure Times
Think about resort check-in, meal plans, the first day’s activities, and how much energy your family will have after traveling. If you’re planning a Disney cruise, also consider arriving near your departure port the day before sailing.
5. The Entire Vacation Experience
A flight is only one part of your Disney vacation. Choosing the right resort, building in downtime, and planning activities around your family’s interests can have a much bigger impact on how the trip feels.
